I believe without it any help would have come too late. And at the same time, White could not consume Masaki either, a Quincy with an unusually strong Blut vene. By binding Masaki and Isshin together, Urahara prevented Masaki from being consumed by Bach. At least at that time, the soul of a dead Quincy returns to Bach in order to be consumed. Urahara knew about Bach and his connection with the Quincies, his "children". This "what if" scenario could be a great topic for fanfiction or an anime filler story - when/if the anime returns. I am interested in hearing what anyone who finds this interesting thinks. Or, would both of them have a chance to live, with Isshin surviving the Still Silver forming in his heart under the assumption that Urahara/Ryuuken/Souken performed an operatation on him in time? Could have Masaki lived as well in that scenario, if she were equipped with with some tools/weapons/artefacts (provided by Urahara) or if she used Kido to fend Grand Fisher off? Would the switch mean that Isshin dies from Auswhaelen and Masaki dies to Grand Fisher since her Shinigami abilities would've been annuled and hidden thanks to the soul binding procedure? The scenario gets complicated when it arrives to the point where Masaki and/or Isshin have to face Grand Fisher and Auswhaelen. Would she end up studying medicine in the World of the Living like Isshin did? She would become a big sister figure for Rangiku and a maternal one for Toshiro, I suppose. She wouldn't be chasing skirts and flirting around like Isshin was, but with Masaki's radiating, cheerful and playful spirit, she'd still provide fun character interactions with Rangiku, Toshiro and others. Having Masaki on the Shinigami side would've been very interesting, especially when you think about her being Kuukaku, Kaien and Ganju's aunt. Ryuuken would perhaps still develop a teenage crush for Masaki, be burdened by the duty to secure a marriage with an Echt Quincy by his mother while having tender feelings that would develop into romantic love and marriage with Katagiri. It could even be similar to Ichigo and Uryuu's relationship. The two would know each other from their childhoods and they would develop an interesting relationship teetering on the edge of intense rivalry and true camaraderie. The story would differ when it comes to Isshin and Ryuuken. Masaki would still volunteer to bind her soul to Isshin's to prevent him from succumbing to the Soul Suicide. I assume that the two would still meet and fight Whitey with Isshin taking a bite from the special Hollow to draw it closer and annihilate it (although it perhaps wouldn't have been equally cool compared to how Masaki's done it). Such a simple mix-up would end up with interesting story-lines. Ichigo, Karin and Yuzu would still be their kids. What if Masaki had been a Shinigami and what if Isshin had been a Quincy? How would that switch influence the story if Masaki was a Shinigami from the Shiba Noble House and Isshin was a Quincy from the Kurosaki clan. Usually, the "what if" scenarios can only be interesting up to a certain level in my opinion, but this one has gotten me quite interested.
